Bones are sleeping

This project looks at sleep as a state where the body is still, but the mind is busy. I study the link between bones and stripes: bone lines give clear directions in the body, and stripes provide a simple way to map those directions onto cloth. I analyze sleep postures and skeletal structure, then deconstruct and remodel the bone motif in two ways.

In 2D, I translate spine, ribs, and joints into stripe layouts, seam maps, and quilting routes on flat patterns. In 3D, I build padded channels, corded tunnels, and modular pieces that echo tendons and joints. Tests with plaid and dark fabrics, cords, and net structures help me balance softness with controlled tension.

The final garment is a detachable, structural down jacket. Panels can wrap, unhook, or reconfigure as a scarf, cape, or hood. Adjustable cords let the wearer tighten or release pressure along the shoulders and spine, like a calm “frame” around the body. The aim is practical: more warmth, weight distribution, and a sense of privacy and security at night or in transit.

By moving between flat pattern logic and 3D construction, the project explores how clothing can read the body’s structure and give simple, tangible comfort.
